DIBRUGARH, Nov 21 – Dr Bimal Nag, the first Adivasi PhD holder of Assam and former vice principal of Darrang College, passed away this morning at his residence in Tezpur. He was 82.

He left behind his son, a daughter and grand children.

Dr Nag was a pioneer in steering the Adivasi movement in Assam with respect to scheduling of the Adivasis. He was also associated with various organisations, prominent among them being the Adivasi Council and Assam Mundari Mahasabha.

Dr Nag gave the illiterate Adivasis of Assam the much needed leadership at a time when there were hardly any Adivasi Graduates.

Dr Nag was born in Kanke village in Ranchi, Jharkhand on July 22, 1929 and came to Assam when his parents were brought by British soldiers. He did his schooling in Guramari LP School in Tezpur and did his Matriculation from Tezpur Government Boy’s High School. He graduated from Cotton College with Botany and also did his MSc from there. Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati-Laxmi Oraon, who was stripped naked and brutally assaulted by a violent mob in broad daylight in the central Beltola locality of the city on November 24, 2007, began a three-day fast on Tuesday demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the Adivasis and tea tribe communities of Assam along with four other demands.

The other demands include enhancing the wages of tea garden workers from Rs. 70 a day to Rs. 200 a day, rehabilitation of Adivasis families who were displaced during 1996 and 1998 ethnic riots between the Bodos and the adivasis, rescheduling duty hours in tea gardens so that parents can ensure that children go to school and ensure justice in cases of violence in Beltola. Ms. Oraon was brutally assaulted by a violent mob when she travelled from her village to the State capital for the first time to take part in a rally organised by the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) to demand Scheduled Tribe status for the Adivasis of Assam.

Explaining the rationale behind her demand for rescheduling of working hours for tea garden workers, Ms. Oraon told , “Children of tea tribe communities are lagging behind in education as parents cannot ensure that their children go to school every day as they have to leave early for work under the existing time schedule. If the work hour starts at 9 a.m. then parents working in tea gardens will be able to ensure that their children go to school regularly.”

She said that the AASAA would also stage hunger strikes across the state on the third day to express their solidarity to her cause.

Ms. Oraon said failing a response from the government, she would undertake a five-day fast in Guwahati.

GUWAHATI: The long-pending issue of the Adivasi community got a thrust on Friday when, for the first time, a delegation of the Adivasi National Convention (ANC) along with five Adivasi ceasefire militant groups sat for a tripartite dialogue with Shambhu Singh, the joint secretary (northeast) in the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA). The meeting was held in the presence of officials of the state home department and the department of Welfare of Plains Tribes and Backward Classes (WRT&BC).

Ceasefire militants groups like Birsa Commando Force, Adivasi Cobra Militants of Assam (ACMA), Santhal Triger Force, Adivasi People’s Army and AANLA are now under ANC, the umbrella organization.

The meeting, held in the city’s Special Branch headquarters located at Kahilipara, discussed the issue of allotting ST status to the Adivasi community and instructed the state government to omit all the demarcations in their population.

“Till now, the Adivasi population of the state was divided between the tea tribes and other Schedule Tribes. But as per the new instruction of the joint commissioner, all Adivasis will be under the same community,” said Zabrius Ekka, chariman of ACMA. He added the next date of the dialogue was settled after three months.

“In these three months, the convention will have to submit the historical background of the Adivasis of the state to the government.Courtesy: TheTimesofIndia.

Train derailment mastermind arrested

Guwahati, A senior leader of the little-known Adivasi People’s Army (APA), an Assam-based insurgent group, has been arrested in connection with the July 10 derailment of the Guwahati-Puri Jagannanth Express that left 100 people injured. Silva Oraon, deputy chief commandant of the APA, was arrested

on Friday night in the Uttarpar area of Baksa district along the Indo-Bhutan border.

Four coaches of the train had derailed following a blast triggered by a remote-controlled device near Rangia in Kamrup district. Shortly afterwards, the APA claimed responsibility.

On Wednesday, two APA cadre were nabbed from a tea estate in Baksa in connection with the blast. The police said they provided vital leads that helped crack the case.

Oraon had a major role in the blast on the railway tracks,” said AJ Baruah, superintendent of police, Kamrup. “He went into hiding when his role in the blast became clear and a joint team of the police and army launched a manhunt.”

The APA has its support base among the tea tribes. The group — active in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri districts — also has links with the United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland.

The APA’s goal is to create an autonomous council for tribals in the state. The police detained four other APA members for questioning from the Gossaigaon area of Kokrajhar. They are also probing the possibility of the Ulfa playing a role in the blast.Courtesy:HindustanTimes.

असम में आदिवासियों पर हुई ज्यादती : बाबूलाल मरांडी

November 7, 2010 Leave a comment
