KENDRAPADA: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Sunday said he was ready to mediate between the government and the Maoists, claiming that the Operation Green Hunt could not resolve the ultra Left-wing extremism.
“The Green Hunt by the security forces cannot solve the Maoist problems anywhere in the country, including Orissa. Poverty has to be alleviated first for this, because unrests such as the Maoist menace crop up in places where there’s no wealth,” Ramdev told newspersons after attending a yoga session here.
“Given a chance, I will like to mediate between the Maoists and the government. The Maoists want a change in the system, and so do I. But for this, their means is violence and mine is the path of non-violence. The Maoists cannot reach their goal unless they shun violence,” he told.
Blaming corruption and lack of development in certain areas as the cause of rise in Maoist activities, the yoga guru asked the government to ensure development in all tribal-dominated areas. He said, “Efforts should be made to reform the Maoists. And if they still do not return to the mainstream, then law should take its own course.”
Ramdev claimed that the Maoist problem was a result of years of neglect in areas that were mostly mineral-rich. He suggested that the government should put in half of the revenue earned from mining for the development of locals. “Orissa is rich in minerals like iron ores, chromites, coal and bauxites. But some politicians and mine mafia have been looting the resources in the tribal-dominated areas that do not have adequate civic facilities. The people of these areas suffer from tuberculosis, cancer and other diseases due to rampant pollution,” the yoga guru said.Courtesy:TheTimesofIndia.
“I will launch a new party if politicians do not put an end to corruption. I expect my yoga followers to convert into voters if I launch a party,” he said, adding, “The Centre should bring in an effective law against corruption and there should be a provision of death penalty for those found guilty.”
