Hill panel meet

Darjeeling, Nov. 29: The panel formed to look into the territory demand of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha will examine “all available data” to come up with its recommendations.

The committee led by Justice (retired) Shyamal Sen met today after the people of the Dooars and the Terai had deposed before it in writing for over a month. The last date for submission was October 31.

L.B. Pariyar, one of 10 members of the committee, said over the phone from Calcutta: “We have received bundles of opinions and we are now in the process of using all available data to ensure that we do justice to the representations made by the public.”

But the committee has some hurdles on the way. To start with, there is no demographic census of the region to distinguish between Nepali-speaking people and others.

The Morcha had been demanding that the Gorkha-dominated areas of the region be brought under the jurisdiction of the Gorkahaland Territorial Administration, a new administrative set-up for the Darjeeling hills.

“Also, the 2011 census is at a very preliminary stage while the 2001 census cannot be taken as accurate,” said Pariyar.

At today’s meeting there were suggestions of surveys to be carried out locally. The panel will meet once again on December 15 and by then the areas that need ground survey are likely to be identified. Courtesy:TheTelegraph.
