Ranchi, May 6: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a case after a state outfit alleged CRPF and Cobra jawans of brutally torturing a Latehar villager who is battling for survival at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi.
Jharkhand Human Rights Movement (JHRM) had written to the panel on May 3 pointedly accusing the security forces of mercilessly beating up Sylvester Minj, a villager of the Naxalite-hit Barwadih area, on April 5, leaving him with a broken cervical spine.
Incidentally, Sylvester, 32, is the brother of Lucas Minj, who was allegedly killed by the CRPF during a combing operation in Latehar in January. Having registered a case (589/34/22/2012), NRHM is expected to send notices to the state police and CRPF shortly and begin a probe.
Speaking to The Telegraph, JHRM general secretary Gladson Dungdung said, “We have requested the panel to immediately interfere and launch a high-level probe into the matter. It isn’t a first-of-its-kind instance. Security forces have been violating human rights, for which there are many testimonies in the past.”
He cited the example of the death of Lucas.
“Security forces killed Lucas on January 31 after branding him as a Naxalite. Lucas happened to be deaf and dumb. On that day, he was tending his herd of cattle near the Koel riverbank. The jawans began questioning him but he couldn’t reply. He was then killed and his body dumped in the river,” said Dungdung, who is also a member of the Planning Commission’s assessment and monitoring wing.
The incident came to light a week later when Lucas’s body was recovered by fishermen. “One of his brothers, William, went to file an FIR with Barwadih police. The police beat him up. But he didn’t sit silent and approached the local media and politicians, who in turn forced Barwadih police to register an FIR against unidentified persons,” said Dungdung.
Sylvester, who is undergoing treatment at RIMS, was questioned by the forces while he was returning home, Dungdung said.
“After knowing that he was the brother of Lucas and William, he was beaten black and blue throughout the night,” said Dungdung, who claimed to have investigated the incident and interacted with villagers.Courtesy:TheTelegraph.
