Maoists kidnap children as they fail to find recruits

Bundu (Jharkhand)

With Maoism on the wane, the rebels are now resorting to kidnappings to counter the shortage of cadres.

The Maoists are forcibly abducting tribal children, some of them in the six to the 16 year age group, with the objective of training them as frontline combatants and as shields during operations against security personnel

Recently, Jharkhand Police bust a Maoist network that was actively involved in the abduction of children

During the raid, a 10-year-old boy was rescued. Two Maoists identified 32-year-old Kanchan Munda and 30-year-old Panchu Lohra were arrested in Bundu town while trying to take the child by bus

The rebels confessed that they had been ordered to carry out the kidnapping on the orders Gautam Dhara area commander of the Committee of CPI (Maoist) Ram Moham

There are several criminal cases against Ram Moham, including killings, abductions and ranson.

“During interrogation, it was revealed that they are former naxlas helping the CPI (M) for a long time in providing arms and other logistics. We have recovered two mobile phones from their possession. We have also spoken to rescued kid and his father and it was clear that they have abducted him after making a false promise of taking him to a marriage party,” said Aseem Vikrant Minz, Superintendent of Police (Ranchi).

The Naxal move to induct more children into their cadres is a malicious act to overcome their manpower crunch.

A majority of the children are initially made part of Bal Sangathans – the children’s wing of the Maoist Army, so as to have a ready supply of trained fighters to take up the fight against security forces.

The Naxals also indoctrinate children, both boys and girls, about their ideology with the help of Naxal literature translated from English into various tribal languages

Ignoring human and child rights, the Naxals are adopting all means to expand their base force

Human rights groups must take an immediate note to crush the Maoist menace.
