Move to distribute three cents of land to tribals flayed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM;The Adivasi Dalit Munnetta Samithi said that the State Government’s move to distribute three cents of land to tribals, dalits and other landless people was aimed at denying the land which these hapless people deserve, as the UPA Government had prepared a national policy to provide 10 cents of land for constructing houses and one hectare of land for agriculture.

Samithi president Sreeraman Koyyon, vice- president Ashtapalan Vellar and secretary C K Thankappan said here on Friday that it was nothing but self-betrayal on the part of the government to bring Sonia Gandhi to inaugurate the ‘pattaya mela’ to distribute three cents of land to the people of Arippa, who had launched the agitation for land for the last eight months.

They said the parallel stir launched by a Congress leader close to the Chief Minister was to defeat the purpose of the agitation launched by the hapless tribals.

They said both the LDF and the UDF had a history of ditching the tribals and the dalits. The government was reluctant to take over lakhs of acres of land possessed by Harissons Malayalam. It is once again trying to leave the dalits and tribals with three cents of land as part of ‘colonisation’, they said.

They said that such efforts would only lead to bringing down the cultural growth of these people.

From September 3 to 6 ‘Arippa Bhoosamara Sandesha Padayatra’ would be organised. Welfare Party state general secretary  K Ambujakshan would inaugurate the padayatra in Kulathupuzha town at 4 pm on September 3. On September 7, a Secretariat dharna would be staged in this regard.
