Junior engineer arrested for sevashram mishap

Berhampur: A junior engineer (JE) of Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Baliguda, was arrested on Friday for negligence in duty after two tribal students died at the sevashram in Kandhamal’s Bastingia on Sunday.

The mishap took place after the parapet collapsed. Three more were injured.

The JE, Nirod Kumar Sahu, who was in-charge of repairing the building, allegedly dumped two truckloads of construction material like sand and stone chips on the parapet even though it was in a dilapidated condition, sub-divisional police officer of R Udayagiri S C Bariha said. “The mishap took place due to his negligence,” the SDPO added.

A separate inquiry into the mishap was conducted by the technical consultant of SC&ST development department, while the district administration ordered inspection of other residential schools run by the department. There are 127 such hostels.

“The inquiry report of the technical consultant is likely to be submitted to the government. We have no knowledge of the findings,” district collector N T Nayak said.

District welfare officer (DWO) Paramananda Pruty said all hostel inmates of Bastangia sevasharm have been shifted to the school building after the mishap. Around 400 students live in the hostel. He said inmates were sitting on the verandah of the hostel after lunch when the parapet collapsed.

The hostel building was constructed by ITDA, Baliaguda in 2006-07. It needed some repair as water leaked through the roof at some points.
