DIBRUGARH, Oct 6 – The 11th Adivasi Mahasabha of the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) will be held in the last week of January, 2014 at Moran. The three-day socio-educational and cultural fest of the Adivasis is an annual gathering of thousands of Adivasis from the State.
Since the event is going to be held in a tea belt, the top brass of the Adivasis has proposed a thorough study on various problems plaguing the Adivasi communities in the tea industry of Assam, AASAA president Raphael Kujur said. Intellectuals, social activists and several Adivasi leaders will attend seminars on the first two days, while on the third day, a cultural procession and open session will be held, Kujur added.
Issues like scheduling of the Adivasis, issue of land pattas, hike in the wages of tea garden workers, upgrade of education and health and implementation of the Plantation Labour Act, etc., will dominate the Mahasabha sessions. AASAA is also contemplating to declare a mass boycott of the ensuing Lok Sabha polls in 2014 in the event of the failure of the Government to accord Scheduled Tribe status to the Adivasis.
