Acting on a public interest litigation filed by former Kuchinda MLA Brundaban Majhi, the Orissa High Court has issued notice to State Government on making provision for supply of rice at `1 per kg to the SC and ST students staying in the school hostels managed by NGOs or others.
The bench comprising Chief Justice AK Goel and Justice AK Ratha has asked the Government to file its response within two weeks.
Majhi filed the writ petition seeking a direction to the State Government to provide rice to the SC and ST students staying in the hostels managed either by NGOs or other private organisations. According to the petitioner, the Government is providing 15 kgs of rice per month to those SC and ST students who are in the roll of Government schools and those managed by Tribal Welfare Department. The same facility should be provided to other private school students belonging to SC and ST category.
It was stated by him that though he has submitted a representation to the Government, no action has been taken.
He appealed to the court to direct the Government to make provision in the interest of the students.
